X-Men: Days of Future Past, directed by Bryan Singer, is one of the finest movies of the X Men series. It is one of the strongest franchises of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The story starts in the future. Sentinel robots were created to kill mutants. But now they are on the way of extinction of human race. A small team of X Men are surviving through this – Kitty Pryde (Katherine Anne – Ellen Page), Bishop (Omar Sy), Storm (Halle Berry), Bobby (Iceman – Shawn Ashmore), Colossus (Daniel Cudmore), Blink (Bingbing Fan), Warpath (Booboo Stewart) and Sunspot (Adan Canto). They are discovered by Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). The only solution to end this war is to go in the past and stop Mystique ( Raven – Jennifer Lawrence) to kill Dr. Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage). Kitty send Wolverine and Magneto in the year 1973. Logan had tough time to bring together young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) to stop Mystique from doing so. Hank (Beast – Nicholas Hoult) and Quicksilver (Peter Maximoff – Evan Peters) helps him throughout. The story takes unexpected turn from here. Erik tries to kill Mystique so everything can be stopped. But, she run away wounded hurt by the bullet. Trask gathers her blood samples from the street of Paris and finishes his robot project. As the most awaited scene, Charles speaks with Professor X and get inspired to fight back. At the other front, Erik stole Magneto’s helmet. Mystique, Erik, Charles, Beast and Wolverine – all gathers at White House lawn, Washington, D.C. all with different objectives. Erik took over the charge of Sentinels and makes him against the President, Trask and other key people. In this epic battle, Charles finally succeeded to convince Mystique not to kill Trask. As she gave up the bad future ends instantly. In the final scene she took over charge of Wolverine who was badly hurt by Erik during the battle. As marvel’s new tradition, after the end credits, we see the glimpse of En Sabah Nur (Apocalypse). A big crowd has gather around he is constructing a pyramid. He is accompanied with his four horsemen. It sets the stage for next movie X-Men: Apocalypse.
Singer’s directional excellence of weaving together the Future (Dystopia) and the Past (1973) seamlessly had made this an awesome cinematic experience. Bryan had done a great work of balancing two parallel universes – Future and Past. The story is very well supported by screenplay of Simon Kinberg, great emotional character drama with flavors of past and future timezone. The characterization of future sentinel are very dark and appealing. John Ottman is at his best, handling both departments of Music and Editing. The tight editing with properly integrated background score keeps you focused in the movie. X Men – DOFP has combined the essence of X Men Trilogy and First Class. Mystique is the central character of this episode. Wolverine is there, but as a very strong supporting character. He still fascinates with his stylized lines of ‘Hey Bub‘ and ‘Hey Kid‘. One of the best new entry is Dinklage, from Game of Thrones. Well, the major thing is missing in the movie – Stan Lee’s cameo.
The high octane VFX is obviously one of the USP of X Men series. It has so many outstanding VFX sequences but these two are most astonishing :
- The super slow motion video sequence of bullet stopping by Quicksilver in Pentagon kitchen. Please don’t see in on-line before you see the movie in theater.
This is undoubtedly the best shot of the movie – Oscar entry is confirmed !!!!
- After seeing this shot, you cannot ask for more. But there is one more – In the climax battle, Erik lifts the entire Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium of baseball and covers the entire white house with it.
The biggest jackpot of the movie is the introduction of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. In the comics, they are described as ‘The Twins‘. Marvel gave their first glimpse in the end credits of ‘Captain America – The Winter Soldier‘. They both are coming if full fledged roles in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron‘. This is not to be missed superhero movie. It actually rubs off the old mistakes of X Men series. It’s kind of reboot for X Men, promising for more gigantic and thrilling chapters yet to come.
