The National Fire Protection Association found that house fires caused up to $6.5 billion and more than 2,500 deaths each year from 2012 to 2016. However, by following our fire safety plan, you can create a safe environment for you and your family. 

Install the right equipment

Your first task should involve installing smoke detectors throughout your home. These devices should be placed on the ceiling or high on the wall to detect any smoke that rises from a fire. You should have them in every bedroom and on each floor of your home. You should also test your smoke alarm batteries every month and change them at least once per year. Fire extinguishers come in different classes, some for wood and plastic, others for oil and gas fires and still others for electrical fires. Learn these classes and place the appropriate class in strategic locations. For example, you may place a Class B extinguisher in the kitchen so you can quickly put out cooking-related fires. Just as your city conducts a Fire Hydrant Flow Test periodically, you need to have your extinguishers tested at least once per year.

Eliminate fire hazards

You can also take steps to reduce or remove any fire hazards in your home. For example, look at your electrical outlets to determine whether they are overloaded. This is common during Christmas and other holidays when you plug in lights and other decorations. Look at your power cords and extension cords closely. Search for frayed or damaged wires. Throw out any damaged wiring. The back of your refrigerator, dryer vent and your chimney should be inspected and cleaned at least once per year.

Store gasoline and other flammable materials in their proper containers and locations. Matches and lighters should also be stored out of children’s reach. Finally, space heaters should only be used in accordance with their instructions. 

Prepare your home as per fire safety plan

Make sure your doors and windows open easily, and invest in ladders for rooms above the first story of your home. Each room should have its own ladder. Then, create an escape plan. You will not get panic if such a situation occurs. Obviously, such preparation does attract a cost, but it is to keep you mentally safe.
