If you are working for someone other than yourself, it is likely one of your main goals is always going to be promotion. You want to get as far as you can within your industry and the business you are working on, and this can be for a number of reasons.

You might want a promotion for self-esteem reasons, or because it’s a challenge. It might be for the money or because you get a company car at the next level of your job. The reasons why you want a promotion aren’t as important as getting it in the first place, but this can be difficult, especially when there are a number of candidates for the role.

If you want to get a promotion, there are some different ways you can go about securing it. Read on to find out what some of them are.

Get Qualified:

Having additional qualifications — and letting your boss know about them — is a great way to gain a promotion, especially if you have gone out by yourself and applied for and studied for them. Not only will an extra qualification show that you know exactly what you are talking about regarding a specific subject, but it will also show that you have the initiative and the intelligence to go out and get what you want.

Therefore, going to school part time, learning online, or attending a night class, is always going to benefit your career. It will also give you more confidence to be sure you know your subject well, as lack of confidence can be a reason why you might not go for a promotion when one is offered.

Ask for It:

In some cases, your employer may simply be oblivious to the fact that you want a promotion. They might think you are perfectly happy doing what you are doing, and if you are particularly good at your job, they may not want to move you.

If you call a meeting with your employer to talk about promotion and ask to be considered when a position arises, your boss will know that you are interested and they will be able to look at your work in a different light.

Of course, asking doesn’t mean you will get the promotion if you aren’t the right candidate for it, but not asking definitely means you won’t get it, so it is certainly worth making the appointment and talking about your options.

Get a New Job:

If all else fails and your employer doesn’t put you forward for promotion and you keep missing out, then it might be time to look for a new job. This can be uncomfortable, especially if you have worked somewhere for a long time, but you need to do what is right for you, not what is right for your employer (necessarily). There is no point in working somewhere if you can get a better job somewhere else.

Promotion doesn’t have to come from within the company you are currently working for, and getting a new job at a higher level with a better salary and maybe even better prospects shouldn’t be a problem if you are qualified and with the right experience. Weigh up the pros and cons of what you should do, and start to search around online if you think a new job is the best way to go.
