The real challenge lies with all the major actors: Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen), Hound (Rory McCann), Tormund (Kristofer Hivju), Gendry (Joe Dempsie), Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer), Thoros of Myr (Paul Kaye) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). They have to do justifying acting in front of chroma or in an empty battle space. To give a sense of fighting, as per the shot demand, the actors deal with green screen props or half green clothed actors. The actor Emilia Clarke was shot on a large mechanical device which got replaced as Dragon in post production. The green colored and dragon head shaped hydraulics machine rig was pictured in controlled environment. The hydraulics rig was used to mimic all possible movements of Dragon which will help Emilia to do perform acting as per the storyboard. Camera was continuously moving, so track marks (track points) were used in all green screen shots. As typical VFX pipeline, all the crash and burns are integrated with live action shooting in post production of Game of Thrones. The huge CGI (computer-generated imagery) also include lots of use of VFX stock footages, set extensions and crowd simulation.
The major storyline of this episode was the journey of seven misfits to bring back one white walker to convince Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). One of the biggest remarks behind the scenes of Game of Thrones S07 E06 was to use multiple shooting locations of different countries. Various production teams worked in-sync to represent same look and feel of the scenery of Beyond the Wall episode. The frozen lake sequence was a tough one to make. Two major locations of shooting this episode were Iceland and Belfast. Initial journey to find white walker got filmed at Iceland location. The final battle between the heroes, dragons, wights and Night King got pictured at Belfast.
GoT S07 E06 will be remembered as historical episode as Daenerys loses one dragon named ‘Viserion’ and Night King turn it into a zombie dragon / wight in action packed battle. Names of three dragons of Daenerys Targaryen are Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion.
