3 tips for working from home after a surgery

If you have somehow gotten injured or needed surgery for one reason or another, there is a good chance that your work life is going to be disrupted. Especially if you are going to wind up needing to be in a rehab facility for a period of time, getting back to work full time may present a challenge. So when the time comes that you are able to keep working while you are still recovering, there are a few things that you are going to want to do to ensure that you are able to be successful with this.

1. Make sure you prioritize communication

If you are used to working from home, then working while you are recovering likely won’t be much different. The main thing that you should still be worried about is communication.

When you can’t see people from work in person, you need to be even more cognizant of how well you are able to communicate with them. And while you are needing to have some adjustment to your normal work routine because of your surgery recovery, you will need to be even more proactive about communicating your needs and how you are doing with your job. 

2. Figure out what adjustments you need

Depending on the type of job you have and the type of surgery that you just underwent, you might need to figure out some adjustments for how you can keep working without slowing down your recovery. 

If there are things that you need to do a little differently while you’re recouping and regaining your strength, make sure you speak with your boss about these accommodations and set yourself up so that you can have these adjustments in place. This way, you will be able to keep working even when you’re not yet at 100 percent. 

3. Plan your day so you have time to rest

After a surgery, even when you are doing some tasks that used to be easy for you, the energy it takes to do these things can take a lot out of you. So to help ensure that you are able to sustain yourself throughout your entire workday, it’s wise to plan things so that you have time to rest between big spurts of energy.

If there are things in your work day that are going to be strenuous for you, try to give yourself some buffer time before and after those tasks so you can rest a bit. Even just doing a smaller and less stressful task can give you some active recovery time and help you not push yourself too hard, too fast.
