So, lets start to help you to get hired in your dream job and studio by writing a professional job application mail.

1. Mail subject line

It is one of the most common mistake areas.

HR’s inbox is flooded with hundreds of resumes of artists who has applied for various 3D Animation and VFX jobs. Apart from these, there are many other mails from the categories of daily operations, policies, follow-up, vendor onboard and many more. If your subject line doesn’t show relevancy or clarity of your mail communication, it can easily be lost in other emails.

The subject line in the email serves several important purposes. It is the first impression of your email and can significantly impact whether it gets opened or not. In a cluttered inbox, an engaging subject line stands out and compels HR to open the email. It helps to quickly understand the purpose or email’s topic. Moreover, it is also helpful for allowing them to prioritize and organize their inbox efficiently.

A clear and concise mail subject line sets expectations and helps the recipient understand its relevance and urgency. It also increases the mail open rate, which can lead to communication and engagement.

Never use these mail subject lines

Check out some of the most common mistakes and how it can be vague or misleading for anyone.

02 Hello Sir/Madam, My name is [your name], and I’m submitting an application for the job of VFX roto artist. A copy of my resume is attached to this mail. If you put such long text in the mail subject line, it will be truncated. Even after opening the email, you can’t read the complete lines.
03 Applying for 3D artist 3D covers a large gamut of job applications – Modeling, Texturing, Lighting, Rigging, Animation, FX/Simulation/Dynamics, CG Supervisor/Generalist etc. Mention the specific job role name.
04 Applying for VFX artist Like 3D, VFX also has so many job roles including Roto, Paint/Prep, Cleanup, Rotomation, 3D Tracking, Matchmoving, Compositing, VFX Supervisor/Generalist etc. Please mention the job role that you want to apply for.
05 Work links / Latest demoreel There is no clarity or relevance here. It is ambiguous. You should not put HR to do a guess work.
06 [your name]’s resume You should mention the job title. Your name is already seen in the ‘From’ column.
07 Hi It’s not a WhatsApp conversation. It doesn’t show professionalism and courtesy. Such email might be trashed instantly.
08 VFX ARTIST APPLICATION Never ever use all caps. In an email jargon, it is kind of an insulting behavior.
09 For animation job!!!! Never use such excessive punctuation. It looks spammy.
10 Job Highly unprofessional. Again, it’s not a casual WhatsApp chat. If you are applying for a job and in need of it, you must speak in a professional language.
