Animation for Toons webinar

Animation involves the creation of a video by working on various frames. Due to such nature, it is a complex yet creative job. Now a days, Animation is used everywhere – movies, TV, web series, games, ads, various modes of marketing and broadcast mediums. Apart from many variations, this article specifically focuses on the genre of the Animation for Toons.

Before going for this niche segment, first let’s understand this art form.

What is Animation?

The history of animation is too vast to cover in a single article.

As mentioned earlier, Animation is a process to bring life to our imaginations. You can animate characters, props and all surrounding elements to convey your story. It captivates from kids to elders alike because of its fascinating art form. Walt Disney is one of most inspiring figure of the animation world. From his time of 2D animation, the technology has evolved a lot. Modern techniques had made the animation pipeline and workflow relatively easy.

The animation process typically begins with a script. The script is then used to create a storyboard, which is a series of sketches that illustrate the story. Once the storyboard is approved, then comes the part of finalization of characters, costumes, environments, props and many other supporting objects. After all of these (it’s not as easy as it seems though), the animators begin to create the individual frames of animation.

Types of Animation

In a broader term, there are two types of Animation, which again gets sub-branched in many.

2D Animation:

It’s a very classical and traditional form of animation. It has its own charm and magic. Animators draws and animate each character and background by hand, frame by frame. These are drawn on paper or cel. Each frame is slightly different from the previous one, to give the impression of motion when they are played in sequence. When all these are photographed and put one by one, it makes the animation video.

In a nutshell, as the name suggests, 2D animation is a technique that involves creating the illusion of movement in a flat, two-dimensional space.

Some of the most iconic and still watched 2D animation cartoon characters are: Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, The Simpsons, South Park, Donald Duck, Pikachu, Mario, Aladdin, SpongeBob, Tom and Jerry, Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Garfield, Popeye and many more.

3D Animation:

3D animation is a digital art and encompasses a versatile medium. It involves use of computers and many advanced softwares to cut down the production time. Having said this, this invention has pushed the creative boundaries and hence it also consumes a long timeframe, depending on the complexity of 3D animation project. It gives more immersive experience and photo realistic output. It is also referred as CGI (Computer Generated Imagery).

So, it utilizes computer softwares to model, rig, texture, light, animate, and render three-dimensional objects and characters, allowing them to move and interact within a 3D environment. Such power packed compositing gives a dynamic and rich visual experience.

Most of the 2D characters are turned into 3D as the technology evolved. DC and Marvel comic characters are the best examples of it. Apart from the gigantic universe of these two comic giants, some of the other notable 3D characters are: Shrek, Sulley, Gollum, Wall E, Baymax, Buzz Lightyear and many more.
