And here comes one more Marvel’s superhero pic in the series of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by the director duo – Russo brothers (Anthony and Joe Russo). I never thought that Captain America 2 can be this cool. Each chapter is raising the quality bar and this one is just awesome.
The story is : SHIELD is compromised. As the story unfolds, it reveals that it had been infiltrated by HYDRA and had been a threat to humanity the whole time. The breakthrough here is the project ‘Insight’ for per-emptive strikes. It is about to eliminate possible threats before even they can emerge, through the drone device named Helicarriers. Three of these are linked to spy satellites to take the entire world on target. But, this is the catch. They are not built to kill the threats, it’s target is super heroes, agents and possible enemies of HYDRA. In the final battle, Captain America fights against his old friend of World War II who has now became the Winter Soldier. You will witness a great drama of conflicting morals between Captain America (Stever Rogers) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) is a great fuel in-between. Fury’s entry after his fake death is just mind blowing. All major characters got apart after SHIELD destruction – Fury heads to Eastern Europe to get HYDRA’s remaining cells, Agent Romanoff appears before a Senate subcommittee, Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) joins Tony Stark, Rogers and Wilson (Falcon – Anthony Mackie) goes on the mission to track down the Winter Soldier. Man, I was dying to see Tony Stark once. Iron Man is mentioned 3-4 times indirectly, but Marvel cant afford to show Iron Man in Captain America movie. He will just still the show – the same as Wolverine (Huge Jackman) got the whole theater clapping for just one shot appearance in ‘X-Men:First Class’. The biggest insult of Captain America in his own movie – Alexander asks Nick to bring Iron man in his niece’s birthday party !!! The best punch line of the movie is – Hail HYDRA. It literally revolves the entire movie in just a second. First it is spoken from Senator Stern (Garry Shandling) and then by Robert Redford (Alexander Pierce) when he shot dead by Fury. The most viral thing went onlie after the movie release was that it has two climax :
- The first one sets the stage for the main villain of ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron‘ – Baron Von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann). He is operating the very special base of HYDRA. His biggest weapon is Loki’s scepter. Also he has prisoned ‘The Twins’. They are Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Baron officially proclaims the ‘Age of Miracles‘ in Marvel Universe.
- In the second climax, after the end scroll, the Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes – Sebastian Stan) is visiting the Smithsonian Museum to see the Captain America and The Howling Commandos exhibit. It flashes his own lost history of fallen American Hero.
Natasha, The Black Widow, is the trump card of these series. She looks drop dead gorgeous in her new avatar. To give her company, Agent 13 (Emily VanCamp) is introduced in the movie. It’s very early to destruct the SHIELD. It was kinda a big element for the Avengers series. But, it’s a smart move to give boost to the current running ABC TV Series – Agents of SHIELD. Stan Lee‘s cameo is simply superb. The mute appearance of Chin Han (Councilman Yen) just refreshed the memories of ‘The Dark Knight‘. You never know, this can be the starting of DC and Marvel team up for crossovers. The VFX is simply the best in its class. VFX is the backbone for this kind of superhero movies. And this one puts you on the edge of the seat. It has nearby 2500 VFX shots, out of which ILM (Industrial Light + Magic) completed about 900 shots. The Digital Doubles are used heavily in fight sequences. The Helicarriers, Washington DC, Potomac River, Arnim Zola (Toby Jones) sequence are just the tip of the seamless integration of live action with cg elements for top notch Compositing. The secondary VFX Production studios are Rise, Trixster, Scanline and Luma Pictures. You cant afford to miss the very crisp and flat style motion graphics just before the end scroll.
