Google Chrome problems and solutions

As of June 2020, Google Chrome leads the list of web browsers’ market share with more than 65% share under its umbrella. So there is a high chance that you are reading this blog post using Chrome (well, I am using the same). It is not the hype that gave Google Chrome the pedestal it stands on today, and there are valid reasons behind that.

The browser mainly focuses on changing the whole internet ecosystem and making it more straightforward, more accessible, and one that simply works. Just like every other renowned product or service, Google Chrome is subjected to some occasional bugs causing problems.

Therefore, after we thoroughly studied and analyzed what the most frequent and significant problems its users face are, we find it essential to explore these 6 Google Chrome problems and ways to fix them.

1. Aw, Snap!

Problem:

Even though Google has tried its best to glorify the page crash in Chrome, it doesn’t make it any better. Most of the users have faced this problem, and here are some reasons for the same: corrupted extensions, website unavailability from the server, or an outdated version. However, regardless of the causes, here’s how to fix the problem.

Solution:

While reloading the page often helps, we understand you must have tried that so here are some other solutions:

  • Reset Chrome: go to settings in the upper right corner, click on the Advanced button, then click on Reset, and a pop up asking for confirmation will get displayed.
  • Disable hardware acceleration: Under the Advanced settings, turn off the option that says ‘ Use hardware acceleration when available’ and restart Chrome.

2. Frozen Tab:

Problem:

At times, it is not just a web page, but the entire tab or window crashes down and freezes. While it is not always easy to pin down the cause, some of the activities that can lead to a frozen tab are using too many tags in one window, extension interference, and memory shortage. Here’s the solution to fix the same:

Solution:

  • If it is a frosted window, force-close all the tabs that are running the frozen window.
  • Disable extensions: From the URL field in Chrome, go to chrome://extensions/page, and disable all the extensions. Restart Chrome and enable the extensions that are required.
  • If that doesn’t work, press tabs alt, ctrl, and del. This will take you to the task manager, click on the End process, and restart Chrome.

3. User Profile:

Problem:

A corrupted user profile could be a cause of various Chrome errors. At times, it is not apparent that issues such as crashing, hanging, and unresponsiveness are due to a corrupted profile. However, other times Chrome simply displays errors that ‘Your profile could not be opened correctly.’ This can lead to problems in using features like bookmarks and settings. Thus, here is how it can be fixed:

Solution:

  • To get rid of the corrupted profile, go to Menu → Settings and click on Sign in. There you will see an option that says ‘Disconnect your Google account’ with a warning. Also, during the process, Chrome shows a signal; click on ‘Also clear your history, bookmarks, settings, and other Chrome data stored on this device’ and then select Disconnect.
  • Reopen Chrome and sign in again.

4. Website Notifications:

Problem:

One of the most annoying Google Chrome issues is those notification request pop-ups that Chrome displays as and when you land on a new website. It is not justifiable to receive a pop up when you are visiting a website for the first time. You can select whether to receive these notifications or not, the solution to this one is as smooth as fixing gwxux not working issue and here’s how:

Solution:

  • Hover to three vertical dots at the upper right corner of the browser, click on More → Settings → Advanced. Under the Privacy and Security segment, click on Content settings. Then under Notifications, select Ask before sending.
  • If you are receiving notifications from some specific websites, go to the three vertical dots again and click on Remove.

5. Auto-Playing Videos:

Problem:

We have all experienced getting embarrassed in the office or getting distracted early morning due to the auto-playing-video tabs left unclosed the previous night. While you can mute the tab after opening Chrome and having to listen to its audio, there’s a better way to not having to deal with any of it altogether.

Solution:

  • Go to Settings. Under the Advanced settings, click on Privacy and Security, then select Content settings. Go to the section: Flash and select Block sites from running flash.
  • As many videos are shifting to HTML5, getting a Chrome extension called Disable HTML5 Autoplay can come in handy.

6. Update Problems:

Problem:

It is a given that using an outdated version of the browser leads to putting your device and memory into a high risk. Therefore, to provide its users with a bug-free and improved version, Google updates Chrome automatically. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you always get it error-free. There are errors such as Error code 7 or Error code 3 that crawl their way. Thus, here’s how to fix the update errors in Chrome:

Solution:

  • Try updating the browser manually to fix Failed to start an error. Go to the menu (three vertical dots) → Help and select About Google Chrome. The browser will search for available updates and allow you to manually update.
  • If that doesn’t work out, uninstall Chrome and install its latest version. Go to the Windows Control Panel, under Programs, select Uninstall a program. A list of installed programs will show up: click on Google Chrome and then click Uninstall. Restart your device, then go to the official Chrome website and download the updated version.

Bonus: Rule out all potential problems

Many a time, despite using the techniques mentioned above, Chrome keeps crashing along with other problems. Therefore, it is crucial to keep your device and the browsers clean.

  • For Windows users, the best way to get it done is the Chrome Clean-Up Tool.
  • Whereas for Mac users, Malwarebytes does the job effectively.
