James Cameron is very well known for directing timeless classic and larger than life movies like Aliens, The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Abyss, Titanic, Avatar and many others. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is one of the best VFX movies and will always be, released in 1991. No doubt, over the years, Hollywood had adapted ground breaking tools and technologies​ to create astonishing visual effects. Movies like Avatar, Jurassic Park franchise, Matrix trilogy, Life of Pi, Gravity, Avengers series, Transformers series, Lord of The Rings series, Inception, Planets of the Apes series, 2012, Batman Vs Superman, The Jungle Book, Star Wars series, Spider Man, Iron Man, Harry Potter series, Hugo, Alice in the Wonderland, Guardians of The Galaxy volumes, Ex Machina and many more are cinematic extravaganza.

In the entire list, T2 is always coined as milestone movie for growth of Animation and VFX in Media and Entertainment sector. James Cameron is releasing all time great sci-fi action flick Terminator 2 in 3D on the original movie’s 25th anniversary. A great tribute to Terminator movies. 

The release date of Terminator 2 3D is August 25, 2017.

Visual Effects of the Terminator 2 was very much advanced in compare to technological era of 1991. ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) had produced superlative VFX of simulations along with convincing CGI compositing with live action plates. Special effects support was given by Stan Winston for on-set effects, prosthetics, animatronics and mechanical puppets. Terminator 2: Judgment Day won several awards including Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, MTV Movie Award for Best Action Sequence, BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Award for Best Special Visual Effects and many other accolades.

So, what can you expect in Terminator 2 3D?

Stereoscopic depth visual is the most natural outcome of T2 3D. But, the major enhancement is achieved on color palatte of the entire movie. The 3D treatment came up with bright colors, proper skin tone and contrast details. Like Titanic 3D, James Cameron had gone through for extensive perfection details in 3D conversion process. It is executed by DMG Entertainment and STUDIOCANAL using latest technologies from StereoD in association with Jim’s own Lightstorm Entertainment. Entire process took around a year. 

Technical pipeline of Terminator 2 3D conversion

  1. Original 35 mm negative of film was scanned and followed by complete 4K restoration at Deluxe LA facility. Entire process is done under supervision of Geoff Burdick, Lightstorm Entertainment. 
  2. It required extensive clean up of dirt and scratches from the negative film.
  3. Calibration is achieved on 4K prints by Skip, colorist, at Technicolor Hollywood.
  4. T2 was converted into 3D by Stereo D.
  5. This mammoth process was collaborative work of around 1000 digital artists who worked for six months. 
  6. Every scene is checked frame by frame by James Cameron and Skip to ensure the highest quality 3D conversion. 

Clearly, it is the same old wine in a brand new bottle for Terminator 3D movie. But, it will a great experience to again hear that iconic Terminator OST by Brad Fiedel in dolby digital / atom surround sound system. We just hope that after wearing 3D glasses, the colors wouldn’t fade out. The release date of Terminator 2 in 3D is August 25, 2017.

Why James Cameron is bullish on success of Terminator 2 3D version? 

Cameron has tasted waters of 3D conversion before, in Titanic 3D. It grossed whooping profit of more than $343 million. By time of T2 3D, the entire team is much more excited and experienced. 

On technical note, 3D conversion movie is all about moving camera shots to show depth between background, mid ground and foreground. And, that’s how exactly the filmmaking process Cameron follows. James always take care of depth in shots using wide camera lenses. This cinematic style is an essential trick for conversion, which is already there in original Terminator 2: Judgement Day movie. 

This cinematic depth promises to be T2 3D a great theatrical stereoscoping movie experience. After Titanic and Terminator 2, the entire award winning technical team is now working on Avatar sequels. 

We just hope that after wearing 3D glasses, the colors wouldn’t fade out of T2 in 3D.
